Hermitage of San Antón (Saint Anthony)

This is the most recent hermitage in the municipality of Fortuna, where the image of San Antón can be found throughout the year.

It is during Holy Week when this hermitage becomes the Holy Sepulchre for the ‘burial’ of the Recumbent Christ on Good Friday. This is where the farewell between ‘La Cama’ (as the Recumbent Christ is popularly known) and the Virgin of Sorrows takes place. For three times, both are raised and lowered representing the farewell of the Mother to the Son. After this, ‘La Cama’ enters the hermitage of San Antón and the return journey to the parish church begins. The Hermitage of San Antón becomes the place of Christ’s wake and the statue of the Recumbent remains exposed during the whole of Holy Saturday. As a lying in repose ceremony, faithful and devotees parade in front of the image and collect some of the flowers that are on the throne.

On Easter Sunday, the triumphal departure of the Resurrected Christ takes place, and with it the long-awaited traditional ‘Swearing in of the Flag’, which concludes with the acclamation of the devotees shouting ‘Long live the Resurrected Child’. After this, the procession begins to the parish church, stopping at various points along the way to repeat this act.
