Cueva Negra (Black Cave)

The people of the village of Fortuna
knew about the Black Cave, but
they did not know much about its origin.

In 1981, Professor Antonino González Blanco
studied the cave with other researchers.
They discovered that the cave was used
as a religious site since
the 1st century after Christ born
or even earlier.

One of the most important things
they found were more than a hundred
ancient inscriptions.
These inscriptions were fragments
of a poem called The Aeneid.
This poem was written by
an important poet called Virgil.
People who knew Virgil’s poetry
and with a great talent for poetry
made the inscriptions long time ago.

On 12 September 1985 other researchers
went to see the inscriptions.
They found three more inscriptions
but very deteriorated.
This was due to humidity
and smoke from fires that
some shepherds had lit to shelter
from bad weather or night.
