Municipal Washhouse

This washhouse was built in 1880, as well as the village fountain, joining both underground. It is still in use, maintaining its role in the daily life of Abanilla. Its structure is divided into two distinct areas: the soaping area and the rinsing area, equipped with a tap.

The water that supplies the washhouse comes from the mountains, first passing through the village fountain and being transported underground to the washhouse. This water is then stored in a reservoir located in the annex building, keeping it available for irrigation in the outskirts of the village.

One of the most unique aspects of this water is its thermal origin. Coming from deeper layers of the earth, it emerges at a temperature of 20ÂșC. This natural process enriches the water with sulphurous salts, which gives it a characteristic colour and flavour, although it also makes it unsuitable for drinking.
