Staircase

Built in 1957, this staircase of almost 200 steps connects the Abanilla Town Hall with the el Monumento al Sagrado Corazón (Monument to the Sacred Heart), in the Lugar Alto.

Long before the construction of the monument, the Lugar Alto hill housed an Arab castle, surrounded by a Muslim neighbourhood, a place where justice was administered (aljama), a mosque, an Arab cemetery (maqbara) and a ‘lonja’ (a commercial market).

After the Christian conquest of the territory, new infrastructures were built in the 16th century, such as the Church of San Benito, a church that would later be replaced by the Church of San José, a Christian cemetery and a council.
