Els Molins

The Windmills of La Plana: The eleven windmills of La Plana date from one in the 14th century and the others from the 18th century. They are cylindrical in shape, around 7 meters high and more than 6 meters in diameter. Inside, they have two floors: a ground floor used as a storehouse, and an upper floor supported by a quarter-sphere vault made of local tosca stone blocks, which housed robust mechanisms made of holm oak wood that moved the heavy millstones and held the blades attached to a horizontal axis. All of this disappeared by the end of the 19th century. Today, they are no longer in use and have no blades. Their function was to grind wheat using wind energy.
