ESCALANTE TOWER

Also known as the Tower of Istán, or Arab farmhouse tower, it is located in the heart of the town center at its highest point, on San Miguel Street. It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1985.

An ancient defensive fortification of uncertain construction date, probably of Muslim origin, it is believed to date back to the Nasrid period, and was likely rebuilt by the Christians a few centuries later. It is made up of masonry walls with rows of regular stone and reinforced corners. Inside, a vaulted chamber is preserved, supported by arches and vaults, which are especially visible from the eastern side.

Originally, it may have been one of the watchtowers that formed part of Marbella’s defense system, and it also served as protection and refuge for the local population.
