Calle Mayor
Carrer MajorSince medieval times, this street has been the main artery of the town; in fact, it linked Plaça de Baix with the small square of the Convent. In the 19th century, many shops, craft workshops, casinos and social clubs were located here, serving both the leading citizens and the workers. The street was the obligatory route for everyone heading to the main square, the place where the Market was held.
In this first section, well-to-do houses can be found, such as No. 27, which features Neoclassical elements like pilasters and capitals framing the façade, although made of plaster mouldings that reflect the “Romantic” taste.
As we walk along the second section of Carrer Major, we can see how grander houses mix with those belonging to middle-class owners. The further one moved from the centre, the more modest the residents were, and the smaller their houses became.
