Fortí. Vinaròs-Maestrat Tourism Inspiration Centre
In front of the current seafront promenade, the Baluard del Fortí or Fort Redoubt was a key fortification for the defense of Vinaròs between the 17th and 19th centuries. Built from 1669 onwards, this artillery bastion protected the coast against the threat of pirates and enemy fleets. Over time, it underwent renovations and expansion projects and even served as a barracks and military warehouse. Archaeological work has uncovered its sloped walls, original pavements, and even remains of cannonballs.
Today, thanks to excavations and heritage studies, we can better understand its historical importance and its role in defending the Vinaròs coastline. It now houses the Vinaròs-Maestrat Tourist Inspiration Center, featuring an engaging museum collection and the local tourist office. Visiting this site offers a journey through the maritime and military past of a city open to the Mediterranean.
