Municipal Market

Since 1835, the sale of fruits and vegetables took place in this square until, in 1853, it was moved to the facilities of the ruined former convent of Saint Augustine.

However, the need for a larger, covered space that met new hygienic standards led to the demolition of the convent and the construction of a market, designed by the Castellón architect Vicente Traver y Tomás.

This building is the finest example of iron architecture in the area, a style that flourished between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Inside, one can see how the use of iron provides a spacious, bright, and well-ventilated interior.

Today, it remains the favorite meeting point for locals and visitors who appreciate the town’s authentic gastronomic products. Fresh local fruits, vegetables, and fish —including the famous Vinaròs prawn— are sold daily inside.
