Although some believe the cistern to be of Muslim origin, the truth is that, after the expulsion of the Moriscos from the Kingdom of Valencia —and therefore from Algar— by the decree of the Viceroy of Valencia published on September 22, 1609, and after the repopulation of the village by 26 families of Old Christians, new constructions were carried out to meet the needs of its inhabitants. One of these constructions was this cistern. The cistern played a very important role until the village had a public fountain in the Plaça Major and until running drinking water was installed in all the homes.
The older women still remember when the women of the village would take turns opening and closing the cistern, as well as watching over and cleaning it during the months it remained open.
