Baron's House

Amelia Comba i Comba, was the Official Chronicler of Algar de Palancia for years. Thanks to her work we can know some information about this building.

The “Torre de guaita àrab”, located nearby, and dating from the eighth or early nineteenth century, was located in the place where the casino is today, on the ground floor, and the City Hall on the upper floors. The first houses and streets of the town were built around this building. During the 16th (sixteenth-century) it was necessary to make a major reform; some of the upper floors of the tower were demolished and the walls were strengthened. Experts say that this tower was twice as high as it is today.

The city administrator, appointed by the Orden de la Merced, resided in the “Torre de guaita àrab”. Because the restoration works were going to last a long time, the Baron del Algar decided to built a house-palace, very stately. He frequently visited the works and, in his absence, this new building, called “Casa del Baró”, was occupied by the administrator.
