Hermitage of San Roque
The Hermitage of San Roque is located in the highest part of the town, at the foot of the castle mountain, in Plaza de la Ermita.
Joan Ribera, during his pastoral visit in 1574 (fifteen seventy-four), indicated that a temple should be built there.
20 (twenty) families lived in the village in that moment. Under the bell there is a ceramic mosaic with the image of the San Roque and an inscription: “En el 325 (three hundred twenty-five) aniversari de la benedicció de l’esglesia de l’Anunciació de Beselga – 12 (twelve) de maig 1999 (nineteen ninety-nine) y En memoria i homenatge als moriscos que poblaren la baronia d’Estivella, Beselga i Arenes fins a la seua expulsió l’any 1609 (sixteen nine) – 12 (twelve) de maig de 1999 (nineteen ninety-nine)” The text is also in Arabic.
The day of San Roque, the neighbors take the image of the saint in pilgrimage from the town to the hermitage. 7 (seven) days later the saint is taken back to Estivella in night procession.
