Hermitage of El Garbí

The origin of the Chapel of the Holy Cross of Garbí is linked to the placement of a cross on this mountain on March 19th, 1787. The story of this devotion began with the wish of local resident Francesc Galvis to erect a cross on the town’s mountain. Galvis commissioned carpenter Josep Sacanelles to build a cross with special characteristics, to which the friar Diego J. of Cádiz ordered that a lignum crucis be added. When the work was finished, it was taken to Estivella, where, with the help of the local men, they sought the most suitable mountain. On March 19th, 1787, the cross was erected on Garbí.
From that moment on, devotion to it increased significantly, and in 1804 the townspeople built a chapel on the site where the Holy Cross stood, consisting of a roof supported by four arches.
