THE WINDMILLS

The Windmills, located on a hill that is accessed by the CV245 road towards Altura, taking a path to the right at the height of La Balsilla, is the most emblematic monumental complex in Alcublas since its creation. Alcublas, at a crossroads between the Turia and the Palancia rivers and the Aragón road, is an agricultural town that between 1407 and 1835 was a part of the manor of the Charterhouse of Vall de Crist (Altura). Faced with the need to grind and after several lawsuits with the Charterhouse, in 1644 the town government sent the parish priest Mossen Mañes and the master builder Pedro de Cubas to Xàbia to take a model of their mills. In 1646 the blades and machinery were finished and on September 29th a french miller was hired. The second mill was built later, following the model of the first and both were in operation until the 19th century.
In 2020, all the machinery was restored by Juan Bautista Sánchez, an expert miller. The entire deck, “the friar”, about 7t, can be moved to orient the blades towards the prevailing wind, moving the steering mast with the “borriquillo”. The blades transmit the horizontal rotation to the “Catalina” wheel, which through the lantern is transformed into vertical rotation that activates the flying stone. From the hopper the grain passes through the flying stone and comes out through the chute, converted into flour.
