Gilet
Gilet is a municipality in the Camp de Morvedre region, in the province of Valencia, covering an area of about 11.28 km² and located at an altitude of 83 meters above sea level. Its population is around 3,800 inhabitants.
The town is strongly influenced by Mediterranean vegetation: pine forests, garrigue scrubland, and mountainous areas connected to the Sierra Calderona. Traditionally, its economy was based on dryland agriculture, but in recent years it has shifted toward irrigated farming, with orange groves being one of its most characteristic crops.
In terms of heritage, Gilet stands out for the Monastery of Sancti Spiritu, a Franciscan monastery that now functions as a museum preserving valuable documents and works of art. It also features the Church of San Antonio Abad, in Renaissance style, and the Hermitage of San Miguel, located on one of the highest points of the municipality.
Gilet is also committed to sustainability: the town council has begun installing photovoltaic solar panels on municipal buildings to promote energy self-consumption. Additionally, it is developing a Tourism Plan to take advantage of its natural surroundings and enhance its appeal as a mountain destination.
Culturally, Gilet’s festivities are a highlight of the year, especially the August celebrations, which include traditional events, processions, and bull-related activities.
