Castle Entrance - North Tower
The northern entrance of Buñol Castle is one of the most emblematic and spectacular access points of the entire fortress. This entrance is made through the North Tower, a powerful gate-tower that formed part of the military defences and controlled access to the interior of the castle. The tower was not a simple gate. Its architecture was designed for active defence: it featured a complex closing system, including space for a portcullis, machicolations and locking mechanisms. The passage ran through a succession of arches, forcing visitors to slow down and leaving them fully exposed to control from above. This access led directly to the Parade Ground.
More than just a gate, the North Tower was a true defensive filter, a key element of the castle’s military system, designed to impress, control and protect. Even today, crossing this entrance allows us to understand how the castle’s architecture was conceived not only to be inhabited, but also to be defended.
