ALMOHAD WALLS

The Almohad walls of Jorquera are one of the most significant examples of Islamic military architecture in the province of Albacete. Originally built to fortify this strategic enclave, their stone and rammed earth walls still run along the escarpments above the JĂșcar River. These walls not only served for defense, but also delimited the urban growth of the medieval farmstead. Walking alongside them is like taking a trip back in time to the region’s Andalusian past, appreciating the construction technique that has allowed them to survive for centuries. The walled enclosure adapts perfectly to the difficult terrain, taking advantage of the isolation provided by the natural moat of the river. Its historical importance is such that the complex is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest, being the fundamental pillar that gives Jorquera its unmistakable appearance of an impregnable fortress.
