Juan Molinera’s Pine

“El Pino de Juan Molinera” (Juan Molinera’s Pine) is a centuries-old stone pine, located about 700 metres from the town centre and easily accessible, on a hill within the bed of the Arroyo de Abengibre, popularly known as La Cañada. It is around 400 years old, almost 20 metres tall, and has a very wide trunk (3.8 m in circumference), making it one of the largest trees of its kind in Spain.
Its name comes from Juan Molinera, the former owner of the land where it stands. Over the centuries, it has witnessed the life of the town and has been part of the memories, games, and gatherings of generations of residents.
In 2024, it was chosen as “Tree of the Year in Spain 2025”, thanks to thousands of public votes. It also represented Spain in the European Tree of the Year 2025 competition, where it achieved third place among trees from across Europe, with nearly 37,000 votes.
Today, it is a natural and cultural symbol of Abengibre, a recommended place to visit for its size, history, and beauty. Its immense canopy resembles a large circus tent. Standing beneath it is an unforgettable experience that you should not miss.
