The Municipal Washhouse

The Municipal Washhouse of Carcelén is a restored ethnographic site that transports visitors back to the daily life of yesteryear. Fed by the waters of the Fuente Mayor, this washhouse was once the epicentre of women’s social activity in the village.

Its sheltered structure, featuring long, inclined stone basins, allowed laundry tasks to be performed as a communal effort. Today, it is preserved as a monument to historical memory and the arduous domestic labour of past generations. The clarity of the water and the coolness of the site make it a picturesque spot, steeped in nostalgia.

A visit to the washhouse allows one to appreciate the significance of hydraulic constructions in the organisation of rural society. It is a resource that fosters respect for tradition and offers an educational insight into the responsible use of natural resources throughout the history of La Manchuela.
