“LA MENA” AQUEDUCT
It undoubtedly represents the most important civil construction in Alcublas. On August 28, 1618 (the feast of Saint Augustine), a well was finally found that was named after the saint and from which water would be taken to the fountain and square of the same name. Its construction would extend at least until 1625, resulting in a hydraulic infrastructure with a buried part and another aerial part. In its underground part, the aqueduct has a vaulted masonry gallery with ten breathing lanterns that can be seen along the route. Upon reaching the outer point, the gallery runs through an ashlar aqueduct, covered with large stone slabs like a low-slope roof. Eight ports are distributed along this section for maintenance.Upon reaching the town center, it runs parallel to Virgen de los Desamparados Street, popularly known as “El Barrio” until it reaches the Saint Augustine fountain. The heritage value of this hydraulic infrastructure, built with native stone from the Pedrera from Alcublas, is very notable.
