This small pupitre of blue-painted wood belonged to the girl “Anita Guzm’n”, who wrote her name inside the lid. Within it is exhibited a manuscript notebook and three school books by the publishing house Dalmau Carles Pla S.A., from Girona founded by Josep Dalmau Carles in 1904 and specialized in pedagogy and school books. Access to formal education in the Horta region was gradually, limited and unequal. The school model configured by the State through the legislation that will regulate education between 1860 and 1940 corresponds to the social constructs of a patriarchal society, based on an interpretation of the differences between men and women, clearly unfavourable to them. The women’s curriculum was essentially home tasks so it is not surprising that girls when they referred to school said “go to sewing”.
