Broom
Broom made in the traditional way with palm, palmette, chopped esparto string and cane. Broom maker was one of the crafts that abounded in Torrent between middle 19th century and the first half of the 20th, to the point of creating in 1851 a society with statutes for mutual relief, which was in force until the 60s. The office was passed down from parents to children, and sometimes, when there were no male children, from father-in-law to son-in-law. The work of the barn house comprised the whole process, from the collection of the palm, the manufacture of the esparto thread and the manufacture of the granary, to the sale and the ambulant repair. They announced themselves by shouting “the barnkeeper” or playing a trumpet. There were different types of granaries depending on the type of work for which it was going to be used: grinding granary, roof granary with the long handle to remove the spider webs, brush to whiten the walls of the house, “fucking” brushes, used to clean the oven, or dowry granary, to which pieces of colored wool were rolled. All these tasks were carried out by women in the domestic field.
