Santos Reyes Church

The church of Santos Reyes dates from 1735-1757. This building was promoted by the rector Josep La Casa, who promoted the construction of a new temple to replace the old and deteriorated church, which had previously been a mosque located in the Alcudia orchard. The construction of the nave began in 1735 and was completed in 1757, while the bell tower was added later. For the new temple, a site was chosen in the new square, known since then as ‘La Señoría’, as this was also the location of the warehouse for the Duke’s orange crops. In 1757, the pastoral visitor ordered the old church to be demolished.

Before this, the solemn transfer of the furniture and images from the old church to the new one was organised, culminating on 6th November of the same year with the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament and the blessing of the main altar. Since then, this church has become a key place for the festivities dedicated to the Virgen de la Fuente.

The main altar features a central canvas dedicated to the Adoration of the Magi, the work of the renowned Valencian painter José Vergara Gimeno, one of the most outstanding artists of the second half of the 18th century. In addition, a rococo frontal of the altar commemorating the golden anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin is preserved. This frontal represents the woodcutter Senent Pla, who, according to tradition, discovered the small box with the image of the Virgin while he was making firewood in the Racó del Duc.
