Municipal Washhouse

It was built in 1880.
In the same year,
the town’s fountain was also built.
This washhouse is still in use.
It is divided into two parts:

  • One area for soaping the laundry.
  • Another area with a faucet for rinsing it.

The water for the washhouse
comes from the mountains.
It first passes through the fountain
and is transported underground
to the washhouse.
This water is stored in a basin
of the building next door.
The people of Abanilla
also use the water from the washhouse
to irrigate the nearby fields.

This water is of thermal origin,
meaning it is warmer because it comes
from deeper areas of the earth.
This makes the water
carry sulfurous salts.
The sulfurous salts make the water
have a different taste and color.
That is why it cannot be drunk.
The water that reaches the fountain
comes out at a temperature of 20 degrees.
