Paseo de la Ermita (Hermitage Walk)

The Ermita Walk is a garden.
Where the Ermita Walk is now,
there used to be an hermitage.
This hermitage was built in 1561
in honor of Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch.
Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian are the saints
that protect from contagious diseases
in the Christian religion.

In 1850, a sculpture of Saint Anthony
was brought to the ermita.
After that, the ermita was renamed
the Ermita of Saint Anthony.

In 1967, the building was in poor condition.
The bishop sold it to the Town Hall of Abanilla.
The Town Hall demolished the hermitage
and built the garden that we have today
in Abanilla.

During the May festivals, the captains
roll the flag in the hermitage,
and at night, all the neighbors
dance and celebrate the festivities.
