La Santísima Cruz (The Holy Cross)

The Holy Cross is more than a reliquary; it is the patron saint, Perpetual Mayoress of Abanilla and guide of the Christian faith for its neighbours. It is in the shape of a Latin cross and in its centre there are splinters of the holy wood.

Throughout the year, the Holy Cross is kept in the chapel of the Church of San José. However, during the festivities in May and September, it is the protagonist of the connection between Abanilla and Mahoya, a nearby small village. In these fiestas, two journeys are made: one, where the cross is taken from Abanilla to Mahoya; and the second, where it returns to its church.
