Church of St. Juan Bautista
A Neoclassical treasure in the heart of Alatoz, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1991, and the town’s most iconic monument. The building dates from the 18th century, featuring a Baroque style with Rococo decorative motifs. Records show that by 1761, at least the chancel and the transept had been erected, with its final completion dated to 1780.
It features a Latin cross floor plan with interconnected side chapels and a transept topped by a dome resting on pendentives. Notable highlights include the Neoclassical altarpiece, the work of Lorenzo Alonso Franco in 1806, as well as several religious icons. Of particular significance are the works by Roque López, a disciple of Francisco Salzillo, specifically his Nazareno and Dolorosa.
