Tolosa, Inverted Landscape

Without a doubt, Tolosa is one of the most beautiful spots in the La Manchuela region. It is the only hamlet bathed by the River Júcar, and the river’s passage through the village offers a haven of peace. Over the years, this small village has rightfully earned its place as a cherished destination for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil escape.

Following the course of the Júcar, the river winds through bends and hidden corners until it reaches a point where the flow steadies and the riverbed widens. Here, the hamlet of Tolosa suddenly appears on the mountainside, approximately 5 kilometres from the main centre of Alcalá del Júcar. Its calm waters provide wonderful opportunities for fishing, sport, and adventure, all within a natural setting dominated by pine and olive trees, rosemary, and thyme, alongside a rich variety of woodland flora.

The still surface of the Tolosa reservoir acts as a fantastic mirror, reflecting and inverting the rocky, aerial world that surrounds it. Spectacular images can be captured from the bridge that crosses it, situated very close to the hamlet itself.

It is believed that the village owes its name—and likely its origins—to the fulling activities carried out on the riverbank during the 18th century by the Tolosa family, specifically the batán (fulling mill) owned by Juan Tolosa.
