Defensive Tower

The Watchtower or “Torre Árabe de Algar” is located in the historic center of the town. Although many people consider the tower to be of Arab origin, there are also authors, as FRAY FAUSTINO GAZULLA, General Chronicler of the Orden de la Merced, who estimate that this tower dates from Roman times because of the extraordinary height.

The tower communicated with the outside through an underground corridor that was going to leave near the mount of Calvary. The building was built with stone and mortar. The west-facing part was a farmhouse, which served as accommodation for the guardians of the tower. The east side had four floors. The building is currently owned by the City Council.
