Santuario Ntra. Sra. de Montiel.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montiel is located on the Montiel hill (250 m), which crowns the town and from which you can enjoy an excellent panoramic view of Benaguasil and a good part of the region. It can be accessed by vehicle following the zigzagging and steep Calvary Road bordered by its whitewashed houses, which leaves us in a small square in front of which the façade of the temple opens.

Its origin dates to the miraculous discovery of an image of the Virgin on December 4, 1620; Part of the cave where it was found by the Aragonese shepherd Graciano can be seen through an opening under the altar. Between 1644 and 1651 the primitive hermitage was built, which, being insufficient for the importance of the cult, was expanded to the current temple between 1795 and 1800. In 1916 the façade was restored, and the interior of the church and its surroundings were renovated.

Although the sanctuary was abandoned and left in ruins during the Spanish Civil War, it was rehabilitated between 1946 and 1961, once again hosting its Congregation. The entire complex that includes the Spirituality House with a guesthouse was restored at the beginning of the century, currently maintaining an excellent condition.

Next to the sanctuary is the convent of Capuchin Tertiary nuns whose Congregation was founded on May 11, 1885, by the Valencian Capuchin Fray Luis de Massamagrell (Luis Amigó y Ferrer), who welcomed the sisters into the Magdalena Convent of said town of the existing beguinage in the Sanctuary of Montiel, directed by the Capuchin Ambrosio of Benaguasil, and which had been evicted during the Carlist Wars. They were, along with other young women, the basis of the foundation of the Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family, today spread throughout 32 countries, bringing devotion to the Virgin of Montiel throughout the world.

The sanctuary is an important pilgrimage point, where the image of Our Lady of Montiel, patron saint of Benaguasil, is venerated.
