The fundamental piece of this graffito is a phrase written in large letters that reads: “Viva la casa de Mongrano y Claramonte y muera la de Magança” (‘Long live the house of Mongrano and Claramonte and die the house of Magança’). This is a reference to “Orlando Furioso” (‘The Frenzy of Orlando’), one of the major epic poems of world literature, written by the Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto in 1516 and corrected in 1532.
