SAN ANTONIO ABAD CHURCH

Pl. De la Iglesia

The church of Alcublas is dedicated to the patron Saint Anthony Abbot. Although it has undergone many changes throughout history, its oldest part dates back to the 13th century, which now corresponds to the sacristy. The current church must have been partially built at the beginning of the 17th century, and between 1633 and 1660 a tower of Herrerian architecture was built on the site of the current one and the main nave was expanded until giving rise to the current floor plan with a main nave and a parallel secondary one.
The domed chapel of the Immaculate Conception, covered by blue glazed tiles, dates from the mid-18th century. In 1917 there was a massive fire that destroyed much of the interior decoration, including the organ and the main altar. As a result of the fire, the passage of time and a day of heavy rain, the structure of the 17th century tower was seriously damaged and finally collapsed in 1946. Giving rise to the current tower built in the 1950s.
The main facade shows a door made of local stone, of great simplicity and austerity, whose door is crowned by an image of Saint Anthony Abbot. The rest of the facades show the different stages of construction. Inside we find the main altar, built in 1920 as a reproduction of the one that had been lost in the fire, and modern chapels and altars dedicated to different saints and Marian devotions. It also houses a set of religious paintings dating from the 13th century, taken from another part of the building itself, which is housed in the presbytery.
