San Miguel Church

The parish church of San Miguel Arcángel is located at the highest point of the village, at the foot of the Castle Hill. The current building was constructed over an older one in 1736, at which time the bell tower was added. The previous church resulted from the transformation, in 1535, of the mosque of Xalans. At the beginning of the Civil War, in 1936, it was set on fire and looted, and among the losses were the books from the ecclesiastical archive dating back to 1623. The building is in Baroque style, with a single nave, chapels between the buttresses, and a barrel vault ceiling. On the Gospel side stands the bell tower with a square plan and a single structural body. Above the lintel door, there is a niche that houses the image of the titular saint. The current appearance of the square is due to the remodeling works carried out between 2002 and 2004. These included excavating the hillside to create a new street, constructing a large stone wall, and building new stairs leading to it. The entire square was paved with granite cobblestones, and a large four-meter-high cross was placed.
