MODEL OF THE ISLAMIC CASTLE (12th – 13th CENTURIES)
La Mola Castle was built during the last third of the 12th century by the Almohads. At that time, two spaces were created: the albacar, an area protected by walls where people from nearby settlements took refuge in times of danger; and the main fortress, the alcazaba, surrounded by another polygonal-shaped wall that included several defensive turrets.
Inside the alcazaba, to the left of the current entrance there is a square tower detached from the walls. Although today it is incomplete, it may have reached 20 meters in height. It was built using a technique called rammed earth, over a base of rubble masonry. The entrance of the tower is elevated, serving to monitor and control the territory.
