SOURCE OF THE GENAL RIVER
The source of the Genal River is located in Igualeja, in the Serranía de Ronda, province of Málaga. It emerges from a cave at the base of a karstic massif, in an area of great scenic and ecological value. The spring, also known as El Nacimiento, bursts forth with strength during the rainy season, forming a small lagoon and giving rise to a stream that will flow for more than 60 kilometers before joining the Guadiaro River.
The surroundings of the spring are set up for visitors, with trails and resting areas among poplars, aspens, and chestnut trees. It is a place of interest both for hikers and for those wishing to discover one of the most important and best-preserved rivers in the province. The clear, cold water runs between stones and native vegetation, bringing life to the Genal Valley—an ecosystem rich in biodiversity and an essential part of Andalusia’s natural heritage.
