YUNQUERA SNOW WELL
The snow wells of Yunquera, also known as neveros, are ancient circular structures built in the Sierra de las Nieves to compact snow and store it as ice for later distribution and sale during the summer. They are mainly located in the Puerto de los Ventisqueros and the “Pozos Viejos” area.
These are cylindrical structures excavated into the ground, approximately five to ten meters in diameter and about two to five meters deep, lined with a wall of local stones slightly over a meter thick, with a rough staircase made of stone steps embedded in the wall. They are located in areas above 1,200 meters and on the northern slopes to avoid excessive sunlight that could harm the preservation of the ice.
