The Underground Caves
The Underground Caves of Valdeganga are a fascinating example of rock-cut architecture. Many of the historic houses in the town centre hide a secret within: subterranean caves that were once interconnected by a single long passage. Over time, residents sealed off their respective sections, creating the individual cellars seen today.
These tunnels originally crossed beneath streets and alleys, and many still house large clay vats (tinajas), once used for storing the locally produced wine. Their presence is revealed on the surface by small vents—windows protected by iron grilles—that allow the caves to breathe. Although these are private spaces and not officially open to the public, the warm-hearted locals are often more than willing to show these hidden gems to curious visitors.
