The Hermitage of San Antón

The Hermitage of San Antón is a small temple of popular devotion located in Villamalea, dedicated to the patron saint of animals. Inside, the saints “San Antón” and “San Isidro” can be found, both highly venerated in Villamalea.
This hermitage is the centre of deeply rooted traditions, such as the pilgrimage in honour of San Isidro, held every 15th of May for many years. This pilgrimage is of great local and regional interest, an event that brings together all the residents and friends of the municipality for several days, a celebration that combines gastronomy, traditional games, and local culture, keeping the rural roots of the town alive.
Its architecture is simple and modest, typical of Manchego countryside hermitages, harmoniously integrated into the local landscape.
It represents the closest and simplest spirituality of the people of Villamalea, serving as a place for gathering and prayer outside the parish church. The preservation of this space is a testament to the cultural identity of the town and its respect for traditions passed down from parents to children, bringing together faith, tradition, and agricultural life in one place.
