Turtle's Tollo
A “tollo” is a local term used in La Manchuela and other areas of Castilla-La Mancha to refer to a place where water accumulates, generally a deep pool or a river basin where the water swirls, often after falling over a drop. These sites are notable for the biodiversity they host, linked to the presence of water in Mediterranean environments.
Therefore, “Tollo de la Tortuga” refers to a specific point in a ravine or gully (the Rambla del Tollo de la Tortuga) where a body of water forms that receives this particular name, possibly due to the presence of turtles in the past or to some geomorphological feature resembling a turtle.
Villamalea has an officially recognised short-distance trail named Tollo de la Tortuga PR-AB 41.
