Costa i Borràs Monument

Thanks to Costa i Borràs, Vinaròs was able to build its long-awaited port.

The original structure disappeared during the Spanish Civil War, and the current one was erected in 1952. It was built in honor of Josep Doménec Costa i Borràs, a distinguished native of Vinaròs who became Bishop of Barcelona and Archbishop of Tarragona.

Before the construction of the port in 1875, ships anchored far from the shore. Loading and unloading were very laborious tasks, carried out using small boats. The new port greatly facilitated maritime trade, especially in wine. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Vinaròs experienced its period of greatest economic prosperity, reflected in the town’s architectural expansion of the time. Today, the port is dedicated to both fishing and recreational activities.
