The windmills of La Plana

The Eleven Windmills of La Plana date from one in the 14th century and the rest in the 18th century. They are cylindrical in shape, about 7 meters high and more than 6 meters in diameter. The interior has two floors: a ground floor used as a storage room and an upper floor, supported by a quarter-sphere ashlar vault made of “tosca” stone, housing sturdy wooden mechanisms made of holm oak that moved the heavy stone millstones and supported the sails attached to a horizontal axis. All of this disappeared by the end of the 19th century. Today they are disused and without sails. Their function was to grind wheat, harnessing the wind energy that moved the sails.
